your story actually needs.

Welcome, I'm Dane Rana, DO. I'm a psychodynamic psychiatrist in Pasadena, California, who believes the relationship between physician and patient is itself the most powerful instrument of healing.

I work with capable, accomplished people whose inner experience has never matched how their lives look from the outside — and help them come to accept themselves in their entirety.

A practice built on understanding

I've done this work myself. My own psychodynamic therapy taught me, from the inside, how much can change when someone takes the time to understand you, and that experience shapes how I sit with every patient. In practice, that means therapy and medication held within one relationship — we work to understand the patterns beneath your symptoms, use medication thoughtfully and at the lowest dose that helps, and treat what happens between us as part of the work itself.

I believe that inner peace is what follows thorough and compassionate self-understanding. Every part of you exists for a good reason. Some of those reasons have long outlived their usefulness, but at their core these parts once shielded you from an unimaginable alternative. When you come to see even the parts you are ashamed of as understandable, self-acceptance can follow — and healing can follow that.

Is this you?

Does this sound familiar?

  • Do you hold it together for everyone else, and quietly wonder who's holding it together for you?
  • Do you lie awake at 2 a.m. running through the day's conversations, certain you said the wrong thing, said too much, or weren't enough — despite every outward sign that you're doing fine?
  • Do you sense that if you were honest about your anger, your sadness, or your imperfection, the people around you couldn't tolerate it — so you keep performing the version of yourself they expect?
  • Do you feel that one more request, one more favor, one more person needing you might finally break you — because there's just not enough of you left to go around?
  • Do you know, deep down, that more is possible for you — more ease, more purpose, more life — but feel that something inside you keeps standing in the way of it?
  • Or maybe you live between two worlds: carrying your family's expectations, shaped by the culture they came from, while trying to build a life that's genuinely your own — and quietly wondering whether you're "enough" of either.

Maybe you've already tried the sensible things: exercising more, eating better, meditating, telling yourself to think positively. They may have helped at the margins, but they never quite reached what's underneath, and the gap can leave you wondering whether you're simply doing it wrong. The people I work with are usually more than willing to do the work. What's been missing is a clear sense of what that work actually is.

If you recognized yourself in any of this, you should know two things.

First, none of it means something is wrong with you.

Most people arrive hoping to fix one discrete part of themselves, as if excising it would finally make them whole — but these patterns made sense once, and they were often how you survived.

Second, they can change.

Not through willpower or another round of white-knuckling, but through understanding where they came from, and that is exactly the work this practice was built for.
